Dacryodes edulis is a species of fruit tree native to Africa. It has many names, like Safou, African plum, and bush butter tree. It is found in shady, humid, tropical forest and has adapted to many variations in soil types, temperature and humidity. In Malaysia it is cultivated for its delicious fruits, which are dark blue to violet in color. The flesh is pale and contains lots of vitamins and protein. It is very buttery and rich in oil.
The plant can handle a minimum temperature of 14 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 35 degrees. It is best, however, to keep it at 18 to 28 degrees. They can grow to 18-40 meters.
